New Print: Freedom

Freedom from the Pensacola Beach Collection

It was early December, and the beach was cold, windy, and overcast. As I waited for the sun to set, a pair of birds was feeding on small fish in the shallows. They were doing pretty well, as I recall, making frequent dives at the water and rarely coming up without their prey. The activity was fun to watch, but nothing particularly picturesque. Then all of a sudden, a burst of wind came through and they soared skyward. This was the only shot I managed to grab before they were too high and too far away to get in focus.

The title Freedom had been in mind for this image since that first day, probably because the birds soaring evoked such a different emotion than the one I was feeling at that point. It seemed trite, though, until one day in the summer of 2008 when I was reviewing my portfolio with a trusted friend. She stopped at this one image, and I suppose because she was in a patriotic mood with the fourth of July approaching, she pointed out that the only colors in the picture were red, white, and blue.

Serendipity.
