Pete Souza Named White House Photographer

Although an official statement from the Office of the President-Elect has not appeared yet, the NPPA is reporting this morning that Pete Souza has been named official photographer for the Obama White House.

Souza [official website] is an incredibly talented photographer, who has already filled this position during the second term of President Reagan. He has covered the President-Elect during his time in the Senate and during the campaign, and published The Rise of Barack Obama in summer 2008.

Although the job offer was transmitted to Souza by the incoming Press Secretary, NPPA reports he only accepted after “reaching an agreement that the primary function of the White House photography office will be to document Obama’s presidency for the sake of history.”

I am currently working on a series of articles for another blog on\White House photographers, so I will refrain from any comment on Souza’s appointment except to offer him the most sincere congratulations. Early comment on his (re-)appointment is available here.
